Installing work at the Gate art space
Gloucester Contemporary Artists (GCA) wants your event at the Gate to look its best and be noticed.
We have written this short guide to installing your atwork based on best gallery practice. We hope the following these guidelines will be useful to you to create an interesting show for your visitors.
Important - Gloucester City Council only permits cars to be driven, and parked, on Westgate Street for loading and unloading between 8am to 10am, and 5pm to 6pm
Less is more. Installing fewer works allows the art to breathe and be seen.
Think of placing artworks so the visitor can discover interesting relationships between them.
A good show does not reveal itself all in one go. Create opportunities for the visitor to discover work as they explore the gallery.
When labelling the work, make it simple. Consider offering a separate list of works or a catalogue with prices
Hanging all the work equally spaced at the same height in relentless lines around a gallery can be boring for the viewer and is harder for them to pick out the pieces that speak to them.

Place the artworks to create a flow and visual appeal to your visitors. If you are all 2D artists, consider inviting a 3D artist to join you to bring the centre of the space into play.
Note: The use of tape or tack on the walls is strictly prohibited due to the heritage of the building. Please do not use tape or tack on the windows.
Avoid setting up a table across the space with stewards sitting behind; this may deter people from coming in. A small table at the back of the space enables a much more open and inviting layout.
