James Fowkes

Painter
James Fowkes is a contemporary realist painter whom lives and works in Twyning (near Tewkesbury), Gloucestershire.
James’s work explores the intersection of the mundane and the monumental by transforming everyday packaging—cardboard and plastic, into reimagined landscapes and architectural forms. Through paint, James isolates and elevates these overlooked materials, revealing their hidden structures and textures. The folds and contours mimic cityscapes and natural landforms, inviting reflection on the environments we inhabit. This tension between the artificial and the organic drives James’s practice.
Subtle brushwork and nuanced color bring forward the unexpected beauty in the discarded, urging viewers to see the extraordinary within the ordinary and reconsider the world through a lens of interconnectedness.
