Annette Hacker

Painter
My work is loosely based on 10th/11th centurySpanish religious icons. Their facial images interest me the most, so benign and compassionate. I gradually build up layers of colour by coaxing the pastels around the page, often using my fingers. Then, when the eyes take shape, the image connects. That connection chimes with my photographic past. I trained and worked as a photojournalist, then moved towards creative freelance work. I lived in West Cornwall and it was hard to ignore the volume of art being produced in the area. My last photographic project was to record the development of Gloucester Docks. Gloucester is my home town, and I resettled back here a few years ago.
